Rose Brooks Being Honored for Saving Pets Along with Their Owners
Kansas City, MO August 27, 2019: Nearly 10 years ago, Rose Brooks Center, a local domestic violence agency, accepted its first pet for a long-term stay – a 130-lb Great Dane named Hank. Because of the incredibly dangerous situation he and his owner were facing, Rose Brooks Center made an exception to house Hank that day. Today, Rose Brooks Center accepts four-legged victims of violence in a free-standing pet shelter, allowing families fleeing violent homes to no longer have to decide between getting safe and protecting their beloved pet.
Last night Rose Brooks Center, was honored by The Kansas City Animal Health Corridor for its commitment to protect pets from violence and keep them safe along with their owners. One of Rose Brooks Center’s long-time partners, Bayer Animal Health (also a founding member of the KC Animal Health Corridor), nominated Rose Brooks for the award. “Bayer is proud to support Rose Brooks Center in their effort to increase and improve options for families with pets to live 
without fear,” says Lauren Dorsch, Deputy Director, Communication, Bayer Animal Health. “We nominated Rose Brooks because they recognize that keeping pets and people together can save lives and no one should have to choose between their safety and their pet.”
“People [victims of domestic violence] come from all over the country,” said Susan Miller, Rose Brooks Center CEO. “For many individuals leaving their pets behind was a serious barrier to escaping abuse. Because of our pet shelter, resources are available for them to bring their pets with them.”
National statistics report more than eighty percent of pet owners who enter a domestic violence shelter say they would have left their threatening situation much sooner if they hadn’t feared for the safety of their pet. Because of Rose Brooks Center’s pet shelter, loving owners have 24/7 access to their pets within the safety of the shelter to walk, run, and play. Our pet advocate and pet volunteers offer enrichment activities and coordinate vet care for the animals to help make sure they are happy and healthy. Together, pet and owner heal from the affects of domestic violence in the safety of shelter.
